• On vehicles with OBD-II (96+), diagnostic data from two lambda sensors is sent to the unit.
• The first lambda probe is located in front of the catalytic converter.
• This lambda is responsible for the correct air/fuel mixture ratio and is very important for proper engine operation.
• The second lambda probe is located after the catalytic converter.
• This is designed to determine if the catalytic converter is functioning properly. The catalytic converter function is determined by measuring the difference in exhaust gas properties between these probes.
• If identical values are measured, the control unit has a signal that the catalytic converter is not functioning.
• The control unit then evaluates the fault and the Check Engine error message lights up on your dashboard. In some cases, the car will be put into "emergency mode" and power may be restricted, etc.
• This mechanical adapter essentially shields the lambda sensor so that it still reads the exhaust gas readings, but moves the lambda sensor further away from the direct exhaust gas flow.
• This makes the controller think there is a restriction between the lambdas, just as if there was a catalytic converter between them.
• On some vehicles, you also need to reset the control unit (just disconnect the battery for a few minutes).
• The adapter has plenty of room for long lamda probe types.
